John William Godward - Biography

John William Godward was born in 1861 to a wealthy family that thoroughly disapproved of his becoming an artist. In spite of their objections, he became a painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1887.

Godward was a great admirer of Alma-Tadema, and indeed you can see his influence in the lovely marble and textiles. Godward was also greatly influenced by Lord Frederic Leighton, as evidenced by the glossy finish of the canvas. Godward's subjects were mainly beautiful girls, set in classical type settings.

In 1912 Godward left England for Italy with his dark haired model (seen in Dolce Far Niente and Noonday Rest). His outraged parents and family severed contact with him, even cutting his figure from the family portraits.

Godward returned to England in 1919. By this time though, his work was no longer held in esteem by either the critics or the public. He committed suicide in 1922, leaving a note saying that the world was not big enough for him and a Picasso.

Both were counted among the members of the "Marble School," known for its depictions of subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman life placed in elaborate settings, with especially careful and realistic rendering of details like marble and flowers.




Godward regularly exhibited his paintings at the prestigious Royal Academy in London, where they were initially greatly admired by the public. By the time he was in his fifties, however, the Marble School's approach had fallen out of favor. Godward nonetheless continued to paint in this manner until his death at age sixty-one.

Johannes Vermeer Dutch Baroque Painter

Date and Place of Birth:

October 31, 1632, Delft, Netherlands

This was, at least, the date on which Vermeer was baptized. There is no record of his actual date of birth, though we assume it was close to the above. Vermeer's parents were Protestant Reformed, a Calvinist denomination that held infant baptism as a sacrament. (Vermeer himself is thought to have converted to Roman Catholicism when he married.)

Life:

Perhaps appropriately, given the scant factual documentation about this artist, any discussion of Vermeer must begin with confusion over his "real" name. It's known that he went by his birth name, Johannes van der Meer, shortened it to Jan Vermeer later in life and was given the third moniker of Jan Vermeer van Delft (presumably to distinguish him from an unrelated family of "Jan Vermeers" who painted in Amsterdam). These days, the artist's name is correctly referenced as Johannes Vermeer.

We also know when he was married and buried, and civic records from Delft indicate the dates Vermeer was admitted to the painters guild and took out loans. Other records tell that, after his early death, his widow filed for bankruptcy and support for their eight minor (the youngest of eleven, total) children. As Vermeer did not enjoy fame - or even a widespread reputation as an artist - during his lifetime, everything else written about him is (at best) an educated guess.

Vermeer's early work concentrated on history paintings but, around 1656, he moved into the genre paintings he would produce for the rest of his career. The man seems to have painted with painstaking slowness, dissecting a whole color spectrum out of "white" light, executing near-perfect optical precision and reproducing the most minute details. This may have translated to "fussy" from another artist, but with Vermeer it all served to highlight the personality of the piece's central figure(s).

Possibly the most amazing thing about this immensely famous artist is that hardly anyone knew he had lived, let alone painted, for centuries after his death. Vermeer wasn't "discovered" until 1866, when the French art critic and historian, Théophile Thoré, published a monograph about him. In the years since, Vermeer's authenticated output has been variously numbered at between 35 and 40 pieces, although people hopefully search for more now that they are known to be both rare and valuable

A young painter with imagination. My wife , now deceased, bought me this print many years ago.It is titled "The Puppet Master". It was stolen from me, but thanks to modern technology, I now have a complete collection of Parkes work. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

El Bosco es el apelativo por el que conocemos en España al genial pintor holandés Jeroen van Aeken. Nació en la localidad holandesa de Hertogenbosch, cerca de Amberes, en el ducado de Bravante. Sin embargo, no hay noticias de que saliera de su ciudad natal, ni siquiera a la próspera ciudad comercial de Amberes. Su familia estaba dedicada tradicionalmente al oficio de pintor: su abuelo, su padre, su tío, sus hermanos y su hijo. El taller familiar lo heredó Goosen, su hermano mayor, que de esta forma poseía en exclusiva el derecho a usar el apellido familiar Van Aeken que distinguía las obras de este taller frente a las de otros talleres de pintores. Por ello, Jeroen tuvo que buscar un nombre con el que organizar su propio taller y diferenciarse de su hermano; latinizó su nombre de pila transformándolo en Hieronimus y eligió por apellido el nombre de su ciudad natal S'Hertogenbosch, simplificado Bosch, nombre que en España derivó hacia El Bosco. He began his artistic studies at the age of 13 with a local artist, José Lusán, who had trained in Naples and who taught Goya to draw, to copy engravings and to paint in oils. In 1763 and 1766, he competed unsuccessfully for a scholarship of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, probably working in the studio of the Court Painter Francisco Bayeu, who was also from Saragossa. To continue his studies he went to Rome at his own expense. In April of 1771 he participated in a competition held by the Academy of Parma introducing himself as a pupil of Francisco Bayeu. By the end of 1771, Goya was back in Saragossa, where he received his first official commission, the frescoes in the Cathedral of El Pilar.

In 1773 Goya married Josefa Bayeu, sister of Francisco Bayeu. In 1774, the German artist Anton Raphael Mengs summoned Goya to Madrid to paint cartoons for tapestries for the Royal Factory of Santa Barbara.
