Edvard Munch está considerado como el más importante artista de Noruega. Nació en Løten (Hendmark) en 1863 y falleció en Ekely (Oslo) en 1944. Munch comienza pintando en un estilo naturalistico convencional, pero en 1884 entra en contacto con las ideas avanzadas de los artistas bohemios de Cristianía (la actual Oslo) y su estilo se vuelve más libre y espontáneo. En 1885 visita París por primera vez y alli conoce la obra de los impresionistas (impresionismo), de los simbolistas y de Gauguin (postimpresionismo), de quien recibe una fuerte influencia. A partir de entonces, la pintura de Munch adquiere un carácter simbólico, que se relaciona con los temores ancestrales, las formas se simplifican y el color se vuelve no naturalístico. Munch was born on Dec. 12, 1863, in Loten, Norway. He grew up in Christiania (now Oslo) and studied art under Christian Krohg, a Norwegian naturalistic painter. Munch's parents, a brother, and a sister died while he was still young, which probably explains the bleakness and pessimism of much of his work.
